Upcoming Events...

RALLY DAY is Sunday, August 24. On that Sunday, the children's Sunday school will kick off their new rotation schedule; Mike Nowicki will begin a new series on witnessing; and Vince Lambert will pick up with his group on Lutheran Spirituality.

Sunday School Rally Day: A Family Ropes Course Challenge - August 24, 2008

It's hard to believe summer is almost over. We are getting ready to begin a new, exciting year studying God's word. We will kick-off Sunday school on Sunday, August 24, at 9:40 am. The Sunday school children and their families (mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, siblings, uncles, aunts – whoever makes up your family) are invited to join us for a rope's-course challenge. Each family is a team that will need to work together to complete the course. This event will kick-off the first rotation: My So-Called Family: Jacob and Esau.

What do you need to do?

      • Make a family pennant in fellowship hall during the early weeks of August. The pennants will be hung in Fellowship Hall.
      • Create a family motto or cheer.
      • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
      • Read the story of Jacob and Esau in Genesis starting with chapter 25.

If you have any question, please contact Mary Lynn Kotnour

Ongoing Activities...

ARE YOU GETTING OLDER AND WISER, OR JUST OLDER?  Join in with your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in study of the book of Proverbs, Sunday nights, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. We meet in Fellowship Hall C. You're guaranteed to be spiritually refreshed through this delightful study, and you just may find yourself a little wiser to boot! Questions? Please contact Jay Schaefer (sayhey2j@yahoo.com) for more information and study materials.

"HOW DISCIPLES MAKE DECISIONS"... We will continue a combined Adult Bible class on Sunday morning in Fellowship Hall at 10:00 am, from July 13-August 17. Pastor Mulder will teach this 6 week series on "How Disciples Make Decisions." Each week participants will be able to raise questions, and as a group we will work through a decision-making process. Questions can be raised about things we do at Ascension, in your family, at your job, or who to vote for this fall, etc. I will share a formula to use that really works for followers of Christ Jesus. It goes something like this: 1) Is it commanded or forbidden in Scripture? 2) If not, is it a kingdom of the left (worldly) or kingdom of the right (church) issue? 3) How would our decision witness to our family and the world? 4) Have we done enough of the right kind of research on the topic, etc.?

"MOMMY & ME" Did you know that Ascension has a Mommy and Me group? Our group consists of mommies with children from birth to 18 months. We meet once a month for an outing that moms and babies will enjoy.  All mommies and little ones are invited to join us. For more information please contact Megan Miessler in the church office (407-831-7788 x22) or at mmiessler@ascensionlcms.org.

LUTHERAN SCHOOL STUDENTS AND PARENTS: Application forms for Ascension's tuition grant assistance program are now available from the church office for the 2008-2009 school year. The deadline for fall term assistance is August 31! Contact Jay Schaefer with any questions.

LUTHERAN COUNSELING SERVICES... Conflict, loneliness, guilt, and anxiety can result in the door to peace, joy, and vitality being closed. LCS provides a safe (professional and pastoral) environment - an open door to hope, dignity, growth, and grace. Call Lutheran Counseling Services (407-644-4692)...confidential and professional help according to God's abundant grace.

NEED HELP AROUND THE HOUSE? Not sure who to call or worried about the cost? We have a ministry called Outreach Action Teams. It is a 'helping hands' ministry for anyone for almost anything. Do you have a "handy-man" job need around your home? We have members who will do that free. Do you have a project that needs some help? We have people that will help. Example: Steven Childress recently helped David Preuss install a new hot water heater. We have people who will program your remote, help you learn how to run your computer, or even give financial advice – free! It is part of our ministry to you and those you know. Contact Steven Childress (321-217-6451) or the church office (407-831-7788 x14).

THE 2008 ALTAR FLOWER CHART is up in the sanctuary narthex. Please sign up for a date (or two) and have flowers on the altar. They can be in memory of a loved one, in celebration of an event, or just because! If you have questions, please contact Beverly in the church office (407-831-7788 x14). The flowers are $35 per arrangement.

Recent News...

YOUTH MISSION TRIPS... The month of July was a busy time for our youth group as we had two separate mission trips planned. Eleven high school youth and adults traveled to Colorado at the beginning of the month where they were able to repair cabins and witness to the homeless in Acacia Park. The youth came back excited about what they had done and completely on fire to continue serving the Lord. Five middle school youth and adults traveled to Lakeland in the middle of July where they were able to help underprivileged children in the city. They also had the opportunity to visit several elderly shut-ins in the area. All of the youth, and adults included, had a life-changing experience that they cannot wait to share with each and every one of our members. On Sunday, August 17, during Sunday school, the youth will talk about their trips.

WAY TO GO MICHIGAN LWML! The Lutheran Women's Missionary League of the Michigan District recently voted to give $10,000 to the Arch Books for Indonesia project. The money will be sent to the special account at Ascension, and Audra Mulder will coordinate another print-run of a Bible story in the Bahasa language for children in the highest consecration of Islamic people in the world.
