Sunday School...

V OUR NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM ~ THE ROTATION MODEL    V

A Bible story will be studied for 5 weeks by each age group, with the help of an adult shepherd. On the first Sunday of a new rotation we will have a Sunday School Opening. The children and their shepherds will attend the opening. Vanessa Schaefer will lead the children in song/music, we will celebrate baptismal dates and Pastor will share the Bible story and memory verse with the children. If time permits the children will then break into their classes for a short Bible study with their shepherds. Also on this Sunday, we will meet with the workshop leaders of the upcoming workshop. The following four weeks, each age group will rotate with their shepherd to one of 4 workshops to study the story in a different way. Workshops include Movies, Games, Cooking, Arts/Music, Drama, Bible Knowledge, etc. The curriculum is from Concordia Publishing House and our next rotation is studying "My So-Called Family - Jacob and Esau."

November's Topic:  "Reaction to the Promise - Jesus' Birth"

Sunday, November 16th - Sunday, December 7th:

Concept:  For every action there is a reaction! This Christmas, the children will examine God's action of sending Jesus and the reaction of this promised child on Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, and the Magi.

Memory Verse: "Do not be afraid! I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." ~ Luke 2:10-11

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

    MOVIE WORKSHOP: Lori Russell

Concept: Our reaction to The Promise, Jesus, can be a faithful one by seeking, telling and being open to God's love.

      Activity: Video and Game Card

      Trading Card: Jesus and Simeon

Summary: As the story of Jesus' birth unfolds before them, children use their trading cards to identify the main characters. Primary children play a game of matching with the trading cards while Intermediate children match characters to their reactions to God's promise on game cards. Children learn that God's promise, Jesus, gives them a new way of living with love, hope, and meaning that they can share with others.

    COOKING WORKSHOP: Lynn Ayres

Concept: Our reaction to The Promise, Jesus, can be a faithful one by seeking, telling and being open to God's love.

Activity: Baking and eating Promise Shortcake

      Trading Card: "Me"

Summary: As children make Promise Shortcake, they learn that The Promise God gave to us is Jesus. As they make and eat Promise Shortcake, they fill the shortcake and themselves with ingredients that reflect all that Jesus is to them. Children further learn what their reaction to The Promise of Jesus can be.

MUSIC WORKSHOP: Maggie Mackie & Tia Nelson

Concept: Our reaction to The Promise, Jesus, can be a faithful one by seeking, telling and being open to God's love.

Activity: Song: "Go, Tell It On The Mountain"

      Trading Card: The Shepherds

Summary: Dressed as shepherds, children pretend they are the shepherds sitting and watching their sheep on the hillside overlooking Bethlehem. As they sit quietly watching the stars overhead, the Angel of the Lord suddenly appears to them. Children discuss their reaction to the angel's appearance and learn of the shepherd's reaction of seeking and telling. They learn the song Go Tell it on the Mountain to remind them that God wants them to tell others of Jesus' birth.

ART WORKSHOP: Riane Thompson (1st Sunday) and Amy Thomason

      Activity: Advent Calendar

      Trading Card: Mary & Joseph

Summary: The children will examine how Mary and Joseph react to the surprise of a baby, God's son. While creating an Advent calendar, the children will learn that through all things God works for the good of those who love him and they will understand that when faced with difficult situations today, they can react with trust in Jesus.

"He said to them, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them." ~ Mark 10:14-16
